A Tiny Implant, A Huge Impact
The smallest known medical implant, The iStent® Trabecular Micro-Bypass Stent is revolutionizing glaucoma surgery and treatment as the first Micro-Invasive Glaucoma Surgery device. Developed by Glaukos® in 2012, The iStent® has been implanted in more than 300,000 eyes around the world since it was approved by the FDA in 2012.
The iStent®
The tiny device, only 1 mm x 0.33 mm, is designed to reduce intraocular pressure and dependence on ocular hypotensive medications in patients with mild-to-moderate open-angle glaucoma. Once implanted in the eye, the iStent® works to:
- Restore the eye’s natural ability to drain the fluid that increases intraocular pressure
- Maintain normal eye pressure
- Reduce or eliminate the need for glaucoma medications for some patients
Opening Eyes to Worlds of Possibility
For cataract patients who also are managing glaucoma, implantation of the iStent® during cataract surgery, offers the opportunity to address both medical conditions at the same time.
