OOSS conducts a comprehensive annual benchmarking survey and occasional industry and topical surveys providing the ophthalmic ASC industry and OOSS members with powerful information and tools to sustain continuous performance improvement, and to navigate dynamic changes in the health care environment. While some OOSSMark Programs are designed to shape the progress of the industry and thus open to all qualified facilities, specialized programs to bolster individual facility improvement are limited to OOSS members.

SURVEY COMPLETION AND PREPARATION

Why should I participate in OOSSMark Programs?
OOSSMark Programs, including the annual baseline OOSS Benchmarking Survey represent powerful tools for assessing and initiating and performance improvement. The OOSS Benchmarking Initiative began in 2007 with pilot design and testing of a survey designed exclusively for and by ophthalmic ASCs. A total of 62 OOSS member facilities representing 29 states participated in 2007, reporting 2006 results. In 2008 a substantially revised survey involved 89 facilities and provided the basis for the redesigned survey for 2009. The 2009 survey involved 124 facilities and included substantial changes to align financial reporting with the Allergan Access® Historical ASC Benchmarking Report now available online to OOSS members. Clinical Measures were also refined to address key areas identified by the National Quality Forum and the AAAHC Quality Management and Improvement Standards as presented in the 09 Accreditation Handbook for Ambulatory Health Care. The 2010 survey was modified slightly and engaged 150+ facilities from across the U.S. The 2011 Benchmarking Initiative involved 194 facilities and the expanded 2012 OOSSMark Program anticipates the involvement of well over 200 facilities – representing the top performing facilities across the country and providing the basis for development and exchange of best practice models that are anchored by solid and consistent results.   Expanded OOSSMark Programs are specifically designed to address the unique interests and needs of Ophthalmic Ambulatory Surgery Centers – to afford focused discussion and exchange of information to guide industry-wide and individual facility improvement.   Active participants in OOSSMark Programs demonstrate a strong and sustained commitment to performance improvement on behalf of the patients they serve, the ASC teams they employ and the owners/investors they serve.

Who can participate in OOSSMark Programs?
OOSS member facilities and facilities represented by owner/staff membership in AAO/AAOE are eligible to participate in OOSSMark Annual Benchmarking Survey. To receive and invitation, contact Dr. Kent Jackson at kjackson@ooss.org or by calling 303.910.7314.  Be sure to provide the official name of the facility and name, title, telephone number and email address of the person to whom the invitation is to be sent.   Participation in industry surveys is generally open to all interested facilities and their teams.  Participation in topical survey designed to address specific improvement areas are usually limited to OOSS members.  Participation in the OOSSMark Blog is open to all while the OOSSMark Exchange will be limited to active OOSS member facilities and their teams.

What is the deadline to participate?
The OOSSMark Annual Benchmarking Survey will remain open from June through the end of December 2012. You can begin entering data as soon as your invitation to and unique link arrive by email.

What year of data should I submit for the Annual Benchmarking Survey?
Always provide data for the previous full calendar. For the 2012 survey, enter data for your 2011 annual performance – January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2011.

Did you have to participate in 2011 to participate in 2012?
No, you can participate each year without regard to previous participation. Once you begin benchmarking however, you are strongly encouraged to participate each year to be able to compare your results from year to year.

Is my data secured?
We have taken extra precautions including facility-specific survey access to protect your data. Group data will be reported in the aggregate to protect the confidentiality of individual facilities. When reporting group results, we will only show data when we have 10 or more facilities/responses that meet the criteria. You or a designated person within your facility will be the only recipient of the final report including your individual facility results along with comparative group data.

DATA COLLECTION AND RESULTS

How long does it take to collect the benchmarking data? When will I see a report?
The benchmarking survey will be open for data collection through December 2012. Custom reports for each facility will be created and will be distributed to participants beginning in November 2012 and extending into February 2013.

SURVEY COMPLETION AND PREPARATION

The annual benchmark survey is completed online. No provisions are made for fax or hard copy completion.

To reduce the time needed to complete the survey, a Survey Worksheet is provided to assist you in preparing your responses. Keep the worksheet as a record of your responses to compare with the final report and to assist with historical tracking. Please answer all questions based on year-end 2011 results.
